Yadier Molina Open To New Team If Cardinals Aren't Option

May 1, 2020 8:37 AM

Yadier Molina wants to play beyond this year, but his three-year, $60 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals expires after the 2020 season.

Molina, 38, said before the coronavirus pandemic that he only wanted to continue his career if it was with the Cardinals. That has now changed.

"I previously said that if it wasn't with St. Louis, that I would go home. If we were unable to come to an extension agreement, that I would retire. But the situation with this pandemic has changed everything. Right now, I'm thinking of playing two more years," Molina said.

"Obviously, St. Louis is my first option. But if they don't sign me, then I'm willing to go into free agency. This situation has changed my mentality, and all I want to do is play."

Molina wants to continue exploring an extension with the Cardinals that reaches through 2022, but he is open to options elsewhere if no agreement is reached.

"Before this terrible situation happened, I thought there was a 50/50 chance that the 2020 campaign would be my last. Not now," the catcher said. "The most important thing right now is people's health and getting past this pandemic. It's a very difficult situation. After we accomplish that, after we're able to start the 2020 season, then I'd like to have that conversation."

Yasiel Puig Confirms Marlins, Others Made Him Offers

Apr 20, 2020 8:13 AM

Yasiel Puig acknowledged in an interview that the Miami Marlins were one of several teams to make him an offer as a free agent.

Puig rejected Miami's offers, in part because he's seeking a larger contract.

The outfielder didn't reveal what other clubs offered him a deal, but did say he doubts there will be a Major League season in 2020.

"We hope to play in 2021. I don't think there will be baseball in 2020, but if there is, we will be in some team," Puig said. "I have to stay positive. If the coronavirus has not made me negative, nothing will make me negative."
